Sky Watch Friday - Day After Ice Storm

UPDATE TO THIS POST: I was just able to get back to work today, (my parents picked me up in their 4X4) but the side roads are still bad - the highway is pretty much clear. They're saying that those without electric & water may be without for up to a month. There's no clearing the trees away yet - it's still all frozen, but the high today is suppose to be about 38, then... back down to 24 tonight. We saw relief trucks on the way in to work, so that's good! They've declared several places a disaster area due to all the ice, but I don't think Poplar Bluff, where I am, is included in that as of yet. My parents electric came back on last night! YAY!!! But, I think my sister & hubby are still without electric.

I haven't been out to take anymore photos, (this area is pretty much closed down w/ no electric or roads are too dangerous to drive on) so I'm posting 2 of my favorite shots from yesterday's post of beautiful "Sky Watch" skies taken the day after an ice storm here in Southeast Missouri on Wednesday 28th. Most of the top branches you see in these trees are gone now - well, not gone... just dangling there waiting to break off the rest of the way. But... Just look at that blue sky!!!
To check out more skies from around the world, go to Sky Watch Friday!

On top of all the ice, we got about 2 inches of snow that started about 2am.
My dish isn't working, all the radio stations are out around here, but I HAVE ELECTRIC - THANK YOU GOD!!! My parents have no electric, but they do have a generator. My sister & husband have no electric. My oldest brother & wife DO have electric!!! We just have no idea what's going on locally - we have no means of communication here locally, except cell phone, but I don't want to bother the city... I know they're working to get things taken care of.
A couple of hours ago, my neighbor came over to see if I needed anything (AWWW-He's Sooo Sweeeet) and the one thing they were out of at the store the day before this storm hit was MILK - so I had him get a gallon for me and thanks to him, I'm enjoying a bowl of cereal!!! THANK YOU KEN!!!
I'll keep you updated as long as my electric holds out!

When the ice storm hit Springfield, Missouri a few years ago, my sister was in college there & they didn't have electric for 2 WEEKS!!! Of course, she didn't stay in her house all that time, she stayed w/ a friend there.

Needless to say... I'M SICK OF ICE & WINTER!

UPDATE: Noon Wednesday: They just showed Poplar Bluff, Missouri on The Weather Channel & it's estimated that we have up to 3 inches of ice.

Ice Storm Jan 09

Warning: I'm a bit dramatic in these videos, but it isn't often that I have to deal w/ weather like this!!! Please forgive me!
video video
I shot these two videos just as the sun was going down about 5:30pm this evening and although I hate the sound of my recorded voice, I'm posting these so you can hear all the branches breaking all around me. As I get more videos, I'll post them here w/ these. All the bangs you hear is the ice breaking the branches. The 1st one is from my back deck & the 2nd one is on my front porch.

video video
These last 2 videos are not really what can be seen, but what can be heard - except at one point, there's a flash, which is a transformer. And, when I'm talking about the tree directly in front of me, I'm meaning that the branches are hanging over the house located behind my house and they're swaying badly.

I'm posting these photos in the order they were taken
This is the same tree shown in the last 2 photos.

These last 2 photos are later shots of the same tree in the 1st photo - Notice the break in the branch.

My dish is out now & it's 11pm - Another branch just fell on my roof. I'm going out to see the damage.

Shortly after I checked for damage from that fallen branch, another one fell on my roof. Then later, another one. It's shortly after 2am now & I can't sleep, but I'm so tired & my head is hurting. Every time I hear limbs on the side of the house start falling, I jump up. I've about had it with all this, it's so unnerving!!!

Now, it's snowing

Chihuly

Photobucket

Chihuly is blown glass by artist Dale Chihuly. My uncle used to live in St. Louis, Missouri and frequented The Missouri Botanical Gardens where several pieces of Chihuly are on display (they actually bought pieces to keep there). I'm going to be experimenting w/ some photos he's brought back and I'd like your input if you don't mind. This'll be fun so check back daily and see what I come up w/ next!!!

Random Things About Me!

Betsy at Joyful Reflections posted her version of Random Things about herself & I thought I'd take a stab at it myself. To learn even more about me, scroll down to the post below.

1.
Do you like blue cheese? Love it!!
2. Have you ever smoked?
Yes, I smoke right now & I'm in the process of cutting WAY BACK!!!
3. Do you own a gun? Yes, due to a break-in I experienced in August 08 - 2 weeks after I moved into town after not living in town for over 20 years. They stole my grandmother's wedding set and my grandfather's class ring (which both of my grandparents have passed away now and I'll never be able to replace those family heirlooms) They caught the guy who broke in & he'll be spending quite a few years in prison, as he had been out on parole at the time of the break-in. HA! Serves him right!!!
4. What flavor Kool Aid is your favorite? Well, I haven't drank Kool-Aid in sooo many years that I couldn't say now!
5. Do you get nervous before doctor appointments? I don't have to go to the doctor's office very often (THANK GOD) but the last time I was there, I learned that I have high blood pressure, so that kinda makes me nervous now!
6. What do you think of hot dogs? They're ok once in a while!
7. Favorite Christmas movie? It's a Wonderful Life - I love this movie & Jimmy Stewart!
8. What do you prefer to drink in the morning?
I have to have my Pepsi like others have to have their coffee - have for years!
9. Can you do push-ups?
I used to, but not anymore
10. What's your favorite piece of jewelry?
It WAS my grandmother's wedding set until it was stolen - now I guess it's the antique wedding set I bought several years ago that was on my finger during the break-in or it would have been stolen too. I guess it had been pawned in or something
11. Favorite hobby?
Ummm - Blogging has climbed the charts significantly lately! Other than that, reading paranormal/hauntings books, watching Ghost Hunters on SciFi, world maps, & caring for my cats.
12. Do you have A.D.D?
That's kinda funny, because my sister thinks I do. My attention span IS short.
13. Do you wear glasses/contacts?
Yes & I can't wear contacts because my eyes are too sensitive
14. Middle name?
Ann
15. Name thoughts at this moment?
My grand-daughter, Jillian - I would love to see her and spend time w/ her on a regular basis. It makes me cry because I can't.
16. Name 3 drinks you regularly drink?
3? Ha! 1 & that's Pepsi!!!
17. Current worry?
My grand-daughter, but also my parents business is in trouble & I'm scared that I'm going to have to find another job after all these years & that my parents themselves are in trouble financially!
18. Current hate right now?
The financial crisis this country is in and the fact that sooo many companies, LARGE and small, are closing & employees are losing their jobs!!! Also, on a personal level, that I can't see Jilly when I want to!!! It soooooo isn't fair!!!
19. Favorite place to be?
Home - safe & sound!!!
20. How did you bring in the New Year?
Went to a family party w/ my cousins
21. Where would you like to go?
The Caribbean, anywhere tropical, The Mediterranean, but also Alaska, Germany, Ireland, Scotland, Norway, & Indonesia.
22. Name three people who will complete this?
I'm not sure, but I'm anxious to read what they write whoever DOES complete it. Hopefully, my brother, Brian at Terrell, Texas Daily Photo
23. Do you own slippers? Absolutely, just got a new pair for Christmas
24 What color shirt are you wearing? A White St. Louis Cardinals shirt
25. Do you like sleeping on satin sheets? I've never had a set of satin sheets, so I don't know if I'd like them or not.
26. Can you whistle? I can, but I'd like to be able to whistle like my brother, Brian, w/ 2 fingers. It's sooo loud!!!
27. Favorite Color? It depends on what we're talking about! When I'm decorating, my fav colors are earth tones. I'm also quite fond of the United States flag w/ the red, white, & blue too though. But to pick a color that I'm attracted to, I'd have to say burnt orange
28. What songs do you sing in the shower? I have a radio in my bathroom that I turn on while I'm in the shower & I usually have it on country, although, that's not really my all time favorite genre of music. I LOVE DEAN MARTIN, so if there was a radio station around here that played all Dino, that's the one I'd listen to - but since there isn't, I can't. I do have a fondness for Southern Rock.
29. Would you be a pirate? Absolutely NOT - they're thieves & they're filthy!!!
30. Favorite Girl's Name? Jillian Grace - I tried to get my daughter to Jilly that, but she didn't. She named her Jillian Rae, because Jilly's dad's middle name is Ray.
31. Favorite boy's name? Jack w/ no middle name
32. What's in your pocket right now? a St. Louis Cardinals lighter.
33. Last thing that made you laugh? Dot & a comment about The Godfather!!!
34. What vehicle do you drive? A Kia Optima - but I'd like to be driving a Cadillac EVOC
35. Worst injury you've ever had? I was involved in a wreck 10 years ago this Halloween where a drunk driver was driving on the wrong side of a divided highway & we hit head on driving about 65 miles an hour each - I had came out w/ a broken ankle & my daughter & her friend (both 13 at the time) escaped w/ only minor cuts & bruises. WE WERE EXTREMELY LUCKY!!! THANK GOD!!!
36. Do you love where you live? Hmmm - I love living close to the rest of my family. Just knowing they're close, makes me feel safer!!!
37. How many TVs do you have in your house? Just 1
I commend anyone that reads all of this about me! What are your thoughts? Let me know!!!

Alphabet Meme

Photobucket
Photobucket

Rose from Pics & Pieces posted her version of the alphabet meme & she assigned the letter "J" for me! I am now supposed to list 10 things that I love that begin with that letter. Now, the letter "J" IS a bit of a challenge, but I was up for the task - although, it may appear that I'm grasping at straws here.
If you want to join, tell me in a comment and I will assign a letter to you.

1. "JESUS CHRIST!" - My 1st choice is a given - but, this story is a bit comical. When I was little, my grandmother (on my dad's side) babysat me, as my parents were truck drivers and out of town quite a bit. My g'ma is a Pentecostal and I would go to church with her while my mother was out of town, however, my mother is Catholic and I'd attend church w/ her when she was here, so you can imagine the difference between the two religions. I've been periodically teased about that whole situation and called a Pentecostal Catholic - as if there's any such thing - but at least I was raised in church & I wouldn't trade it for anything now! I LOVE HIM WHOLEHEARTEDLY and there's not a thing anyone could say to me to change my mind!!!

2. "JILLIAN!" These 2 photos above are my favorites of her taken the day after Christmas 08! She's my adorable 17 month old grand-daughter & I miss her so much. This is suppose to be a fun thing, so I'll stop right there.

3. "Jessica" - My 24 year old little sister! She had moved to Springfield, Mo for about 4 yrs to attend college to be a speech language pathologist (and received her bachelors degree), but she's back now & getting settled into her new job in that field. She's a great sister, she's an exceptional person, & when the time comes... she's going to make a fantastic, loving, & caring mother. Everyone who meets her, loves her! (You can't tell that I'm very very proud of her, can you?) She's my little sister, need I say more?!!
The photo below was taken at her wedding (obviously) on May 26th 2007.
Photobucket

4. The name "Jack" - If I ever get another cat (which won't be anytime soon, because I have 3 right now) I'll name it Jack whether it's a boy or girl!

5. "Jackson Hole, Wyoming" - My grand-parents took me there the summer of 1984, 2 weeks after my little sister was born. We 1st stopped in Colorado & while there, I missed my sister so much that I made myself sick, crying & calling mom to see how she was - but by the time we got to Jackson Hole, I was better & was finally able to enjoy the trip. The mountains were absolutely beautiful, which I'll never forget, and we entered Yellowstone National Park not far from there. Here's some web cams from that area.
Looking down over the city of Jackson, Wyoming

6. Actor "John Cusack" He's played in such movies as Say Anything - The Jack Bull - 1408 - Being John Malkovich - Runaway Jury - Serendipity - America's Sweethearts & many many more! He's very intelligent, good looking, handsome, & poised. His latest work is War Inc. - I haven't seen it yet, but I will!!!
Photobucket

7. "Jelly Beans" - Who doesn't love jelly beans?

8. My St. Louis Cardinals "Jersey's" - I have several, so I can't really say which one is my favorite, but I'm usually wearing one of them if I'm not at work.

9. Giorgio lotion & perfume - Ok, so it doesn't start w/ a "J", but has that "J" sound & I love it!

10. "James Patterson's - The Jester" - My favorite book by James Patterson. Now, I can't say that he's my favorite author, that would be Dean Koontz, but that book is my favorite of his.
