Photo Art Friday - Cairo, Illinois

Last April, my 3 aunts & I drove over to Cairo, IL to see the old mansions in the old section of the city.
I was SHOCKED!
The city has been practically burned to the ground by arsonists
& we were told that we were lucky to have gotten out of town by dark!
Cairo, IL was a beautiful city at one time w/ bricked downtown streets
& elegant wrought iron archways & lamp-posts,
but the condition the city is in now is jaw-dropping.
These buildings are just a fraction of the destruction we saw that day...
such a shame!

How truly sad to see the loss of such beautiful buildings. It's hard to understand the "why".

Oh how sad, Tricia... I hate to see things like that happen to towns. Sounds like that used to be a great little town/city.... Makes me so sad.

What a shame to see the demise of such beautiful old buildings.

Your great photos are a sad testament to neglect, abuse and decay. Funny how even decay can look beautiful in a photo. I like the treatments you gave a couple of them. Thank you for sharing your work with Photo Art Friday Tricia.

I know, Jim and I were amazed at the condition of the town when we were there. Your photos take me back there.

These buildings were built to last forever. It is so sad to see how they have been abused and abandoned.

I love old buildings and am always so sad to see them falling apart. I've heard the Cairo has gotten really bad, and definitely not a place you want to be after dark!!

Great shots!

A photo-journalistic approach in capturing urban decay. I wonder what were the contributing factors for the drastic change.

Hi there - who ever comes up with a way of reversing this kind of urban decay will have earned their money for the day!

Great images of a sad subject.

Heartbreaking to see things destroyed like that. No good reason for it.

This is really so very sad Tricia.
It is obvious to see what a beautiful structure this was before this happened.
Love the last image here.
Just beautiful!

Beautiful images and processing. Yes, it is rather hard to see a town in destruction; you have done a excellent job in seeing the beauty, also. Thank you. Visiting from PAF. Karen
